The Control Tower is a listed building within the IWM complex at Duxford and had to be regenerated in line with a strict heritage specification. With a range of skills being required to carry out the works our multi-disciplined workforce was able to carry out all of the project allowing for high levels of quality control and efficient deployment of resources.
With the museum being open for visitors throughout the works it was important to ensure that the minimal amount of disruption was given to the guests and also that recognition of the sensitive history of some of the exhibits was incorporated into the methodology.

External works:
- Render repairs.
- Painting of all external areas.
- Clean down, rake out and replace putty.
- Prepare and paint metal windows to all elevations.
- Remove and replace glazing.
- Remove and replace extract fans to ground floor toilets.
- Prepare and paint door and frame with oil paint as described.
- Remove door signage and re-fix on completion.
- Joinery repairs.
- Thoroughly prepare and paint all external metal work.
- Clean down, prepare and paint soffits with masonry paint.
ATC Control room internals
- Repairs.
- Remove and replace cladding system.
- Roof deck waterproofing.
- Localised repair to stairwell.
The community:
Unusually the community in this case was not just the staff and local people but the wider community that has family and historic links with the Royal Air Force and the events in the history of aviation. By restoring the Control Tower to its best we were able to enhance the experience of visitors to the airfield and in our own way recognise the debt we all owe to the people commemorated there.
